Ivy Cirillo Books

One of the reasons that I debated starting this website was because I wasn't sure what I would write about. I was too scared to post excerpts of my current WIP since it's still a rough draft and I didn't want to give anything away. As you can see though, I decided to build the website anyways!

Well, I soon ran into that problem that I knew I would - I don't know what to write about. After reading multiple blogs, and hundreds of blog posts ideas, I finally found something interesting. I stumbled across the tag "101 Blog Post Ideas for Writers" on the No Page Left Blank blog.

Once I read a few of them, I realized that they all linked to Julie Jernigan's blog, Julie Writes. There, I saw her post, "101 Blog Post Ideas for Writers - Part 1." I hadn't heard of Julie or her work before, but I have to admit, she had a pretty great list of ideas! So, I decided to participate in the blog tag too!

4. How did you know you wanted to become a writer?
Honestly, I didn't really know that I wanted to be a writer, but I guess I should have known. I remember writing stories in elementary school and I won a couple things here and there, but I never really thought I would find a career in it. Ultimately, I just thought that it was fun :)

It wasn't until 2016 that I actually decided to work on my writing professionally. I had always loved all things creative, especially photography; however, my chronic illnesses changed my career path. So, instead of being behind the camera, I switched to behind my computer. I started a blog and started writing for fun. I finally got the inspiration for my book and I started writing!

A few months later, I now have three fiction novels and one non-fiction novel in progress. I'm between 10-20% done with each and I can't wait to get them published! My teachers had always encouraged my writing, but I didn't think too much of it. Now though, I wish I had listened to them earlier!

As some of you guys already know, I'm currently working on a couple verse novels. So, I've been reading a ton of books from authors familiar with writing in verse. Mainly, Ellen Hopkins and Lisa Schroeder.

Before starting my project, I hadn't heard of Lisa Schroeder's work before; however, after doing my research, it soon became clear that she was definitely an author that I needed to check out! So, what did I do? I made my way over to Amazon and ordered four of her verse novels: I Heart You, You Haunt Me, Far From You, Chasing Brooklyn, and The Day Before.

Synopsis:
Lost and alone...down the rabbit hole.

Years have passed since Alice lost her mother to cancer, but time hasn't quite healed the wound. Alice copes the best she can by writing her music, losing herself in her love for her boyfriend, and distancing herself from her father and his new wife.

But when a deadly snowstorm traps Alice with her stepmother and newborn half sister, she'll face issues she's been avoiding for too long. As Alice looks to the heavens for guidance, she discovers something wonderful.

Perhaps she's not so alone after all....

It took a little while to get back on track, but I'm excited to announce that the Weekly Writing & Reading Recaps are back on! This week I accomplished more than I thought I could and I'm excited to share it with you all!

Monday
Today has been pretty productive, I know that I was supposed to get some other work done, but I've been in pretty bad shape the last couple of days. My pain has been off the charts, so I've been curled up with an advanced copy of Follow Me Back from A.V. Geiger! Of course, my guilt kicked in a little bit, so I made sure to send out some emails and schedule a couple posts for Perfectly Ambitious when I wasn't reading! And after forcing myself to get some writing time in, I managed to write six more poems for one of my verse novels!

Tuesday:
Guys, I can already tell you that this week is going to be rough :/ I'm just trying to push through it as easy and painless as possible. Today, I honestly didn't get anything done except some light reading and watching tv. Fingers crossed I'll start feeling better tomorrow!

Wednesday
Today, I went ahead and wrote the book review for Follow Me Back. Plus, I prepped the rest of this month's blog posts for this blog! Then on top of that, I ordered a bunch of new books for the #ICBReadingChallenge2017 :)

Thursday
Today I had another test at the hospital, so I made sure to bring a new book with me! I was able to get some good reading in and picked up some breakfast before heading home. Afterwards, I managed to write a couple blog posts for Perfectly Ambitious, and I even lined up a series of guest posts for Ivy Cirillo Books! Oh and I made a new Facebook page for this website as well as a Bloglovin' account!

Friday
Today, I was determined to get some writing time in! I've felt so guilty for working on everything else, that I forced myself to open up each of my current WIP's and see if I could put words to paper. Surprisingly enough, I was able to! In fact, I even filled in a couple holes in one of my verse novels! And, I wrote a few pages of both of my other books too!

Saturday
I have to admit, today was pretty productive! I woke up and finished the book that I was reading, wrote my review of it, and kept on working! I managed to write a couple blog posts and make a couple changes to my website's design. Plus, I even started reading another book today too!

Sunday
Today was more of a "research" day. I spent a good portion of the day watching movies in hopes to spark some inspiration for my writing. I've had some ideas lingering in my head, but I haven't really been able to get them onto paper yet. Luckily, the movies gave me some really good starting points and I'm excited to add them to my stories! Of course, I managed to get some reading in too :)

Honestly, I always thought there was a bit of a stigma against books found at the dollar store. Unlike the one's you'd find at a thrift shop, I stupidly assumed that the one's marked for $1 were just not good enough to be marked full price.

I can't remember where I got that idea from, but I still check out the dollar store book section anyways. Occasionally, it's for pages to make my paper roses, but this time, I struck gold!

3. Ask a question.
You read the prompt! Now it's my turn to ask the question :)

If you wrote a book under a different name, what would that name be? Why?

Personally, I'll be publishing my books under my real name, but I have considered writing under a different name before! Of course, I haven't put a lot of thought into what that name would be.

I remember when I was a kid, I didn't like my own name very much, so I had considered changing it. I thought long and hard about the perfect name and eventually, I found it! I guess it wasn't too memorable though, because I can't remember what it was haha.

Now though, I think I'd go with something simple. With the help of a name generator and a few helpful filters, I've come up with... drumroll please... Chelsea Delaney! It's simple, elegant, and it's got a nice ring to it!

If you wrote under a different name, or just had the option to change yours, what would it be? Why? Tell me in the comments below!

Monday
Today has been pretty productive, I've finished three blog posts for this website and one for Perfectly Ambitious! I even managed to get some reading time in and I've now crossed book three off of my list for this year's reading challenge!

Tuesday:
Today definitely didn't go as planned. What should have only been a short visit to the rheumatologist turned into a three hour visit. Luckily though, I had grabbed a book on the way out the door and I managed to finish the entire thing while I was there! Plus, I wrote a couple blog posts for Perfectly Ambitious! Then after dinner, I got in bed and read until I fell asleep :)

Wednesday
It's weird having days off, honestly I haven't had one in weeks, maybe even months! Normally, I would use this time to read, but it's Wednesday and I've already finished three books this week, so I figured it was time for a break. So today, I enjoyed watching TV and playing board games with my husband!

Thursday
While today was supposed to be all about writing, it did not go as planned! Instead, I had another doctor's appointment and this time it left me feeling horrible. I had to get my eyes dilated and my body did not react well. From that point forward, I had a raging migraine that didn't go away until well after midnight. So I spent all day in the dark just hoping that the pain would go away!

Friday
Today I finally got those book reviews done, so I can start reading again! I honestly can't believe I've read as much as I have this year, but I'm so excited to keep going! I feel guilty that I haven't gotten any real writing in, but I know that I'm happier reading good words than writing bad ones haha!

Saturday
Today, my husband and I celebrated a birthday with a very special two year old and a bunch of our Navy friends! And afterwards, we enjoyed some awesome Italian food! Of course, once we were done, I was way too stuffed to do anything the rest of the night :)

Sunday
Even though today is scheduled to be my day off, I really needed to use it to work. So, I sent my husband and the pup out of the house in hopes to cross a couple of tasks off of my to do list! By the end of the night, I managed to schedule four blog posts for this blog and three blog posts for Perfectly Ambitious! Plus, I caught up on my Law & Order: SVU and a couple of my other shows too!

Plus, I somehow managed to start and finish reading three different books this week! And if this is any sign of how the new year will go, I can't wait to see what's in store for me!

Ok, guys! Listen up!

If you're following my other blog, Perfectly Ambitious, then you may have seen my previous book review on Jennifer Acres' debut novel, On the Way to Simple! If not, you can check it out here :)

After working with Blogging for Books for a couple months, I decided to see what other companies that I could work with to get books in exchange for honest reviews. Eventually, I stumbled upon NetGalley.

Peaking my interest, I decided to sign up and take a look through their available titles. In doing so, I found a lot of the books on my current wishlist. However, I was specifically on the hunt for a good book to inspire progress on one of my current projects.

In the process of doing so, I happened upon Hello Me, It's You: A Collection of Letters Written By Young Adults to Their Younger Selves. And although, it wasn't quite what I was looking for, it inspired me nonetheless! That's how I ended up coming up with the idea that I shared in my last post, "Upcoming Anthology | Unofficial Call for Submissions."

Anyhoo, I was so interested in what the book had to offer that I went ahead and requested a copy! I was then approved shortly after and immediately downloaded my copy!

Synopsis:
Everyone says being a teenager is CRAZY. But do they mean crazy hard, crazy fun... or just plain bonkers?

Roughly three people in every class have some kind of mental health issue, but most of them have no idea what's going on. They think they're just weak, or shy, or bad, or completely, irreversibly, writing-on-the-walls 'insane'. But they're not. They have some form of depression, anxiety, eating disorder or other mental health issue and they will come out the other side.

This is a book of advice, from young people who made it through, to their sixteen-year-old selves.

Do you ever feel like the apocalypse is coming, and it wouldn't be that bad? Like bed is as far as you want to get today? As though your heart is going to beat right out of your chest and your legs have turned to jelly, at the thought of leaving home or talking to another human being? Or maybe you just feel like when you start worrying, you can't stop.

Whatever form it takes, this book can help you through it.

Trigger warning: Due to it's nature, the content of this book may be triggering. Contains personal experiences of depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, trichotillomania and other mental health issues, as well as issues such as assault.

As some of you might know, I've always wanted to work on a non-fiction book. Originally, I thought it would be about my life and the journey that I've experienced, but I was wrong! Turns out, my first non-fiction piece is going to be an anthology featuring some of you guys!

Right now, it's still in the early stages, but I want to get a sense of who's interested, both in reading the book and contributing to it!

About the Anthology:
As I move forward in my chronic illness journey, it has become abundantly clear just how little reading material is out there for teens and young adults struggling with mental and/or physical illnesses. More specifically, I've found very little material dedicated to chronic illness warriors like myself.

Occasionally, I'll come across a great depiction of what it's like to live with an illness in a fiction book, but that's not what I'm looking for. Had there been a helpful book when I first started this journey, I believe that I would have learned how to accept my new life and cope with the new changes that my body would undergo earlier on in the process.

Since that wasn't the case, I've decided to team up with a myriad of writers and create something new! My goal is to help those struggling with similar problems and conditions, while also working towards ending the stigma against both mental and physical illnesses!

What I'm Looking for:
Ultimately, I am hoping to create a collection of letters from you to your younger self. This can be for a specific age, prior to your diagnosis, or in the early stages of your treatment plans. It's completely up to you!

In these letters, I would like to include a bit of helpful advice as well as inspiration. I don't only want to help educate others, but I want to inspire them too! So consider including how your life has changed since your diagnosis in a positive manner, how you stay positive despite your illness, or maybe even include ways to show yourself self-love. Don't force it though, we want your open and honest letters!

If you're interested in submitting a letter like this, we'd love to hear from you! When first contacting us, please only send a brief description of your experience/journey via email. There is no need to send anything else at this time.

You can email us at ivycirillobooks@gmail.com

If you're interested in this project, but don't want to submit a piece, that's ok too! There are lots of other ways that you can help support this new book!

If you happen to know of someone that you think would be interested in contributing, please share this post with them!

Synopsis:
In short, poignant verses, Reyna Mays' poems explore pain, emotional reckoning, and the power of self-love.

The debut collection from 22-year-old poet Reyna Mays, I Love My Love tells the story of Reyna's childhood, her parents’ toxic relationship, and how, against all odds, she learned to love herself.
