Book Review: You Will Know Me*

After working with Blogging for Books for a couple months, I decided to see what other companies that I could work with to get books in exchange for honest reviews. Eventually, I stumbled upon NetGalley.

Peaking my interest, I decided to sign up and take a look through their available titles. In doing so, I found a lot of the books on my current wishlist. However, I've been determined to read a couple books outside of my usual genre as well.

Having recently read Girl on A Train and Give It Back, I've been craving more psychological thrillers. Luckily, I happened to find a few on NetGalley! When I stumbled upon You Will Know Me, I knew that I wanted to read it! So, I quickly requested a copy and downloaded it to my iPhone as soon as I was approved!

Synopsis:
How far will you go to achieve a dream? That's the question a celebrated coach poses to Katie and Eric Knox after he sees their daughter Devon, a gymnastics prodigy and Olympic hopeful, compete. For the Knoxes there are no limits--until a violent death rocks their close-knit gymnastics community and everything they have worked so hard for is suddenly at risk.

As rumors swirl among the other parents, Katie tries frantically to hold her family together while also finding herself irresistibly drawn to the crime itself. What she uncovers--about her daughter's fears, her own marriage, and herself--forces Katie to consider whether there's any price she isn't willing to pay to achieve Devon's dream.

From a writer with "exceptional gifts for making nerves jangle and skin crawl" (Janet Maslin), You Will Know Me is a breathless rollercoaster of a novel about the desperate limits of parental sacrifice, furtive desire, and the staggering force of ambition.

Review:
To be honest, I was REALLY excited to get my hands on a copy of You Will Know Me. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm dissipated after I actually began reading the book.

I absolutely hate saying that I didn't like this book, but I have to be completely transparent with you guys. I did not like it! The storyline pulled me in and the cover art looked great, but this book just did not do it for me.

In one of the many reviews I read, a reader stated, "I found the writing very flat and cold -- there's almost no emotion between these pages;" and I have to agree with them! Honestly, I couldn't stand the writing! I didn't once feel any connection to the characters or the words written on the pages.

Speaking of characters, I didn't really like them much either. One of the only characters that I actually liked, ended up cheating, which changed my opinion of them completely. As for the rest of the characters, I either couldn't relate to them or I just didn't like them. The only character that I really felt drawn to was Drew. I enjoyed getting to know him throughout the book and it was interesting to see his character grow throughout the chapters.

When it comes to the actual writing, I wasn't a fan. There were so many instances when I wanted to skip ahead, past the descriptions and straight to the dialogue! It just seemed like there was so much unnecessary information throughout the book. Not only that, but I also felt that many of the descriptions and anecdotes were very repetitive.

More often than not, I wanted to give up on reading this book altogether! Honestly, I almost gave up after the party scene and I had to force myself not to time and time again! I've never been the kind of person to give up on a book EVER, so I think it says a lot that I struggled so much with You Will Know Me. It got so bad that I just stopped reading and I ignored the book for over a week! I literally had to force myself to read it and even bribed myself with new books for motivation.

In the end, I would not recommend this book. I know that there are many readers out there that might disagree with me, but You Will Know Me just didn't do it for me! From my experience, this book was just too emotionless, boring, repetitive, and predictable. And I hate to say it, but it's definitely turned me off from trying a couple of her other novels too!
