Ivy Cirillo Books

One of the reasons that I debated starting this website was because I wasn't sure what I would write about. I was too scared to post excerpts of my current WIP since it's still a rough draft and I didn't want to give anything away. As you can see though, I decided to build the website anyways!

Well, I soon ran into that problem that I knew I would - I don't know what to write about. After reading multiple blogs, and hundreds of blog posts ideas, I finally found something interesting. I stumbled across the tag "101 Blog Post Ideas for Writers" on the No Page Left Blank blog.

Once I read a few of them, I realized that they all linked to Julie Jernigan's blog, Julie Writes. There, I saw her post, "101 Blog Post Ideas for Writers - Part 1." I hadn't heard of Julie or her work before, but I have to admit, she had a pretty great list of ideas! So, I decided to participate in the blog tag too!

6. Your first memory of writing
Sometimes, I wish that I had come to the realization that I wanted to be a writer earlier than I actually did! Had that been the case, I might have saved some of my writing from when I was a kid!

Nevertheless, my first memory of writing goes all the way back to kindergarten! I remember it quite clearly too!

It was the first of the two elementary schools that I would attend and my teacher's name was Mrs. Kuykendall. She had us sitting in group tables waiting for her instructions. I had a three-pronged folder in front of me. It was turned sideways and I'm pretty sure it was blue too. Inside, there were multiple sheets of off-white paper with the extra wide lines for children. You know, the one's with a top and bottom line and a dotted line in the middle! To be honest, I can't recall what I was writing about, but I've got a feeling that it might have had something to do with cats :)

BONUS FACT: Mrs. Kuykendall organized a green eggs and ham day for my class and we didn't just read the book, but we ate green eggs and ham too!

After working with Blogging for Books for a couple months, I decided to see what other companies that I could work with to get books in exchange for honest reviews. Eventually, I stumbled upon NetGalley.

Peaking my interest, I decided to sign up and take a look through their available titles. In doing so, I found a lot of the books on my current wishlist. However, I've been determined to read a couple books outside of my usual genre as well.

Having recently read Girl on A Train and Give It Back, I've been craving more psychological thrillers. Luckily, I happened to find a few on NetGalley! When I stumbled upon You Will Know Me, I knew that I wanted to read it! So, I quickly requested a copy and downloaded it to my iPhone as soon as I was approved!

Synopsis:
How far will you go to achieve a dream? That's the question a celebrated coach poses to Katie and Eric Knox after he sees their daughter Devon, a gymnastics prodigy and Olympic hopeful, compete. For the Knoxes there are no limits--until a violent death rocks their close-knit gymnastics community and everything they have worked so hard for is suddenly at risk.

As rumors swirl among the other parents, Katie tries frantically to hold her family together while also finding herself irresistibly drawn to the crime itself. What she uncovers--about her daughter's fears, her own marriage, and herself--forces Katie to consider whether there's any price she isn't willing to pay to achieve Devon's dream.

From a writer with "exceptional gifts for making nerves jangle and skin crawl" (Janet Maslin), You Will Know Me is a breathless rollercoaster of a novel about the desperate limits of parental sacrifice, furtive desire, and the staggering force of ambition.

After chatting with one of the other Navy wives at a sweet two year old's birthday, we got onto the topic of books. I had told her about my most recent book haul with Jet.com and how much I managed to save, and she shared her experience with me regarding ThriftBooks.

I had heard a lot about them, but I hadn't actually shopped with them before. Over course, I'd never turn down a chance to buy new books, so I thought I'd give them a shot! Here's what I ended up getting during my first shopping trip!

One of my favorite things to do, as both and author and a blogger, is to check out other author blogs. It's not just a great source of inspiration, but it's quite informative too! Every now and then I'll find an awesome read about improving your writing skills, but I love stumbling on fun stuff too! Luck has it, I stumbled upon the 777 Challenge on Jennifer Acre's blog :)

Ok...you caught me. Luck wasn't even a factor haha. If I'm being honest, I was hardcore scrolling through her blog and ended up in the archives of August 2016! There, you happy now?!

Anyhoo! I thought the challenge sounded awesome! And I figured I've had this blog long enough, I should probably go ahead and share my first excerpt with you guys. So deep breath in, here it is!

It took a little while to get back on track, but I'm excited to announce that the Weekly Writing & Reading Recaps are back on!

Monday
Today started out great! I finished my first book for the week and then I got to working on some new blog posts! I finished two for Ivy Cirillo Books and one for Perfectly Ambitious, plus I got started on  more than five others! Next up, I connected with some of my awesome readers on social media and then I started reading a new book!

Tuesday:
My goal was to get a TON accomplished today, but things didn't go as planned. Story of my life. Anyways, due to a crazy storm, I had four crazy animals to deal with and a house that couldn't keep the lights on. So instead of working, I spent most of the day trying to keep everyone calm. Luckily, after my husband came home from work, everything calmed down and I was able to get some work in!

Wednesday
As some of you guys know, one of my symptoms is brain fog and short term memory loss. So as I'm writing this, I can't for the life of me tell you what I did today. Normally, I keep track of everything in my accomplishments journal, but I totally forgot to write it all down. For a split second, I thought that I remembered and I started typing it all out only to realize one thing: everything that I wrote actually happened last week. So here I am again, having no clue what I accomplished today. Crazy right?!

Thursday
My plan was to go get blood work done today, but that was just not happening! Unfortunately, my blood work requires me to go without eating, drinking, or taking my medications beforehand and that just was not a good combination for me today. So, I picked up some breakfast for myself and took the day off. Of course, my day off wasn't really a day off. I used my free time to talk to other authors in various Facebook groups and get some advice for a future project!

Friday
Today I watched a couple episodes of Charmed and then forced myself to get my blood work done. Of course, it didn't go as well as I had hoped. The nurse ended up using a larger needle than usual and and then proceeded to spill blood all over my arm :/ Nevertheless, I still tried to get some work done when I got home. In fact, I searched all of my digital and physical files until I found a story that I worked on in high school. It took a lot of digging, but I think I've finally got an idea for my submission for a traditionally published anthology!

Saturday
It was hard to stay motivated today, but I'm happy with all that I've accomplished! I responded to EVERY stinking email left in each of my inboxes and I even started working on various collaborations with other bloggers! In fact, I answered two different questionnaires for interviews and sent a different blogger a guest post as well!

Sunday
Today was pretty productive, I must say! I was determined to finish two books this week and I made that happen! Plus, I managed to start some conversations about future collaborations with other brands and businesses! Not only that, but I worked on a couple of freelance gigs too!

Weekly Wrap-up
Once again, I'm not too happy with this week's wrap-up. I made some good progress when it comes to my To Be Read list, but not when it comes to my writing. Unfortunately, I just wasn't in the write space to get anything done. I know where each story goes next and what I want to write, it just isn't coming out. I think it might have something to do with how I'm approaching my writing time though. Before, I used to spend a whole day writing, but now I'm just waiting until I've finished my regular tasks and don't have any energy left. So, next week, I'm going to try to spend a day over at Starbucks or Panera and hopefully watch those page counts rise!

5. Your first memory of books or reading
I'm sure I say that a lot of these prompts are hard, but this one is especially hard! Many of my earlier memories are a little jumbled up, so I'm not sure that this one is technically my earliest memory, but it's definitely the most memorable!

When I was younger, I know that I had a ton of books, but there was always one that I went back to. It was a children's book that had bible verses and inspirational passages for every day of the year. I can't remember who gave it to me or when I got it, but that book stuck with me for years! In fact, I kept that book and read from it until it fell apart. Thinking back now, I can remember the sweet cartoons sprinkled throughout the pages and the broken spine holding the covers together. Sadly, I don't know what happened to it, but I wish I still had a copy!

UPDATE: Guys! After searching the internet for a while, don't ask me how, I found the book! I honestly can't believe it! It was titled: Blessings Every Day: 365 Simple Devotions for the Very Young (Little Blessings) The copy that I had was the non-Catholic version with a blue spine and it was printed in 2001. That means I was six years old! Honestly, I'm still in shock, but I think I might just have to get myself another copy :)

Publishing your first book is like a Fourth-of-July fireworks finale fired from a starter’s pistol: a huge celebration of an enormous accomplishment that is just the start of the race. That’s how it was with my debut book, Urban Legend: Orphan. It was unreal and amazing; every step was uphill, but the view is worth it. I’ve learned a lot along the way and I want to share some of it along with what’s planned for attacking the next summit. But first some context for the biggest decision:

There has never been a better time to become a self-published author. It is incredible the amount of resources and opportunity available that weren’t around even two years ago, and who knows what this next year might bring. The options for distributing platforms are robust and numerous; however, there is one I’ll be unsubscribing from: KDP Select.

This is my personal choice. There is nothing inherently wrong with the platform, and I’d encourage new and aspiring authors to absolutely jump on board. At least at first.

KDP Select (Kindle Direct Publishing Select) is the same as the standard KDP with an added exclusivity clause: you’re not allowed to publish a title enrolled in KDP Select anywhere else. Again, this is fantastic for a new author because it streamlines the distribution with a few fun little bonuses, including Kindle Unlimited (KU) where readers can read your book for free and you get paid based on the page count.

But there is a risk. As of now, if someone else pirates your book and makes it available on another platform, or someone artificially inflates your page counts on KU (”nuking” is alarmingly cheap), then it’s possible you’ll get a notice from Amazon saying that you are in breach of contract and Amazon will be pulling your books. Just like that, no evidence that the author was at fault, just shut down.

This happened to Adam Dreece. (You can read his story here.) Recently, Amazon took his books down without warning and the appeals process was a mess leading to no satisfaction and possible loss of business. Sure, there are ways to game the system and authors have abused it. But the majority of authors, obviously, want to earn money legitimately. This is the equivalent of a product being stolen at a store and the manufacturer was held responsible for it. No, Amazon is the distributor and it is their responsibility to take care of it, and anything else is unacceptable.

Again, this is not really an issue for new authors. But it is something to consider for authors as they gain heat with their books. No system is perfect and what is a warm incubator for a budding author might strangle someone more established in the field.

So that’s where that puts me now. My KDP Select expires in less than a couple of weeks and I want to go out with a bang and get a running start up the next hill.

Because I’m hopping off KDP select, I’ll be putting the gears into motion to go wide. There are several markets to tap into, either directly or through a distribution service like Draft2Digital or Smashwords.

But the big thing happening is a sorta, semi-relaunch next week from February 13th though the 17th where my book Urban Legend will be free, the print version will be available, and I am doing a newsletter giveaway. Sign up here and you are automatically entered into a drawing for a bunch of fun stuffs! Find out the full details on my blog here.

Lastly, it is true what they say: you learn the most from your failures, and lemme tell ya I’ve failed SO many times. But I’d like to share some fruits of those failures. While the world of Urban Legend is an urban fantasy and incredibly fun to write, my focus is the characters. Over the five books of first cycle of Urban Legend, I’ll be building a large cast around the main character who will all eventually carry their own stories and it’s difficult making them unique. So in the process, I’ve been developing ways to bolster archetypes to make them stand out in my story, and hopefully against other works as well. Look for them over the next few months!

It took a little while to get back on track, but I'm excited to announce that the Weekly Writing & Reading Recaps are back on!

Monday
I can't say that I was super productive in the reading and writing front, but I still managed to get a decent amount accomplished today! I managed to work on three blog posts for this blog, I updated my "What I'm Reading" gadget, and I added social share buttons to my website! I'm also working on a new monthly series that I'll be publishing on the blog :)

So today, I woke up sick :( Needless to say, I didn't get much done and I feel incredibly guilty about it. However, I did use this time to start and complete a couple more series on Netflix. They've definitely given me some great ideas for one of my current novels and I can't wait to start writing again! Fingers crossed I feel better soon!

I'm still fighting off a cold, but I'm excited to say that I managed to get a TON done today! Not only did I work on three blog posts for Ivy Cirillo Books today, but I also got a lot of work done for Perfectly Ambitious too! In fact, I actually finished three more blog posts and I worked on promoting my most recent giveaway! Oh and I did some light reading too!

Thursday
Whelp, I spent another day at the hospital! Luckily for me, I was able to get some major reading time in! Of course, I now feel like complete crap :/ Between the stress of my test results and the pain from all of my current symptoms, I don't have the energy to do anything. I actually had to use my wheelchair today and I know that it wasn't enough. Sadly, I'll be spending the next few days making up for today's outing. Fingers crossed I heal quickly!

Friday
I spent most of today recovering, so I wasn't totally productive, but I'm still happy with what I got accomplished! I managed to squeeze in a little more reading time and I've been working on some new blog posts too! And since I couldn't stop myself from placing another order for books, you might stumble upon a new book haul shortly!

Saturday
Although I don't feel like I got much accomplished today, today was rather productive! I was able to not only secure a couple more guest posts for both of my blogs, but I also wrote some new posts for them too! Fingers crossed I'll spend this month prepping posts in advance instead of playing catch up :)

Sunday
If I had to use one word to describe today, I would say: determined. I have been putting off reading for far too long and I desperately wanted to finish the book that I was reading. So, I buckled down and did exactly that! Not only that, but I also managed to finish three different blog posts between my two blogs and I even started reading a new book too!

Weekly Wrap-up
Overall, I'm a little disappointed in how I did this week. I was really hoping to make some progress with my writing projects, but it just didn't happen. Unfortunately, there was a last minute hospital visit and that took my body for a loop! I'm desperately hoping that I can get back on track next week and maybe even finish reading more than one book too!

Like many of you, I too set New Year's Resolutions for 2017! And of course, one of them was reading related! And if we're friends on Goodreads, then you already know that I've set a goal to read 30 books this year.

Honestly, I struggled to reach my goal last year, so I didn't want to set anything too crazy. I figured that 1 book every 12 days was a reasonable goal and I can't wait to reach it!

So, to keep myself accountable, I've decided to start a monthly reading log! I figured that it would be the easiest way to keep you guys updated while still reminding myself that I need to read! Plus, now you'll be able to read along with me and we can discuss our favorite books along the way :)
